  • Dow Hill and Victoria School Infirmary, Sally (guest) wrote 14 years ago:
This building was (is?) an Infirmary built at the same time as the school in 1898. The douoble storeyed building has two sections on either side of the clinic in the middle. Dow Hill girls were housed on the left (side nearer the school) while Victoria boys were hospitalised on the right. There were two permanent nurses and a dispenser with a visiting doctor who came up if required, from Kurseong township. Chicken pox, measles and mumps were children's ailments often treated and I had my share ! The building which used to be well maintained and serviced, is now dilapidated and badly neglected ..... as are so many of the old establishments in the hills It is a shame for they wouold have a long life of service if money was released by Government to keep them habitable. I was at Dow Hill 1942 - 1950 and very proud of my old school. Sally Stewart nee MacDonald 2011

Dow Hill is not just a buildinig. It is a school for girls built in 1898 when the British were in India. It has a long tradition for excellence in education. Victoria further along on the map, is the brother school through which many a noteworthy man began his early education. Both Victoria and Dow Hill have an old boys and girls association. Informatiion can be found at John Feltham's Victoria and Dow Hill website. Sally Stewart nee MacDonald

I remember this college when it used to be a seminary for Jesuit training. We used to visit from Victoria school, Kurseong for religious instruction and annual picnic for catholic students. The priests were always most welcoming. We were taken around the farm and marvelled at the beautiful cattle and horses kept there. They grew their own vegetables, baked their own bread and even produced their own electricity. Many of the jesuit trainees came from Europe and Australia. The Salesian order had their seminary in Sonada in Darjeeling. DENZIL BROWN

I was in Victoria in 1953 and in Dow Hill from 1950-52 The schools were the best then and I hope still are. I left India in 1954 and I always missed my schools days in Kurseong. My two older brothers were also in Victoria, the eldest from 1950-53 and the second was with me in Dow Hill from 1950-52 and in Victoria from 1952-53. We all have great memories of our time there.

My brother and I attended Victoria from 1954-1956 as boarders.(Irvine house) He completed the Senior Cambridge Certificate in 1956 and we both moved on to La Martiniere, Lucknow. I thoroughly enjoyed my schooling in Kurseong, especially all the excursions to Darjeeling and school matches with Goethals, St. Pauls and St. Josephs Northpoint.Going down to town was a real treat, but the climb back to school was pretty tiring if you could not afford a Landrover. Mr Bloud (chocho) was a popular master with the boys as he was an excellent cricketer. He had a good sense of homour and always spoke with a posh accent. Sadly, he is missed by all who knew him. Going home after final term was especially memorable, seeing your parents after 9 months up in the hills.

I always used to think the name was derived from the word "Whistle"... the whistling of the steam locomotive engine of the famous Darjeeling toy train... So many memories, going past this place to Kurseong town Bloomsfield library, or clambering down the rocks from the grotto upstream...
